Job Posting, Program Director — Gabriola Arts Council
The Gabriola Arts Council is a community arts council serving artists, members, and the general community on Gabriola Island. Formed in 1997, GAC is a federally registered charitable organization run by a volunteer board of directors, and managed by an Executive Director. GAC offers three long-running Festivals—Isle of the Arts Festival, Gabriola Theatre Festival, Artist Studio Tour—as well as a new Music Festival, and a variety of programs including Healing Power of Art and a Youth Engagement Initiative. GAC is an active member of Arts BC and the Alliance for Arts and Culture, and networks regularly with other arts organizations in the province.
The Program Director is a new position replacing our previous Events Manager role. The Program Director (PD) is passionate about connecting the Gabriola community with arts and culture. The PD has the ability to assess and respond to community interests, and will develop cultural and arts opportunities that enliven and enhance the community. Responsible for overall artistic direction of GAC’s major festivals and the annual fundraising event, the PD also oversees and coordinates all aspects of GAC event management and programming. The PD cultivates partnerships and sponsor relationships, and uses these connections to further the goals of GAC.
This is a complex, demanding position, requiring a wide range of skills and experience.
- A bachelor’s degree or equivalent.
- Leadership experience in a nonprofit or arts organization.
- Understands and has worked or participated in the cultural industries.
- Experience organizing large-scale events, including an understanding of technical and other requirements.
- Knowledge of current community challenges and opportunities relating to GAC’S mission and mandate.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills, and able to use these skills effectively in organizational and community contexts.
- Knowledge of marketing, promotion, and fundraising principles, strategies, and techniques.
- Knowledge of effective communication techniques in working with the public, community groups, artists, performers, media and others associated with the delivery of cultural arts programs.
- Experience working with and coordinating volunteers.
- Able to lead, encourage, inspire, and support others
- Enthusiastic about working cooperatively and on a team, and able to work effectively independently.
- Creative, confident, enthusiastic, committed, entrepreneurial, and flexible.

Starting salary range is $30,000 to $39,000 per year, based on 25 hours per week. Some benefits included.
